For Your Toughest Field Machining and Welding Challenges Rely on Tri Tool for Innovative Solutions
A world leading gas turbine manufacturer’s client encountered system design modification requirements critical to keeping their turbine integration project on schedule and avoiding generating losses.
Challenges included addressing field retrofit requirements in Japan in time to bring the first of two units on line, then modifying the remaining unit stateside to meet the aggressive startup schedule in Japan. The work to be performed stateside afforded only a one week window of opportunity.
The performance metrics for selecting sub-contractors included elements of cost, time and quality, with cost being of least significance. The project constraints and emphasis on quality and time demanded an expert specialty sub-contractor with a reputation for taking a solution based approach to fulfilling the client’s ultimate requirements.
Tri Tool was repeatedly recommended by several sources based on its reputation for rapid response and methodical approach to understanding the client’s overall project requirements through thorough assessment. While several contractors were consulted, only Tri Tool was able to devise a means of meeting the client’s schedule.
The project scope included “Blue Line” machining to remove approximately .345” material from the turbine exhaust frame diffuser, maintaining precise depth control to facilitate Foreign Material Exclusion while generating a symmetrical double bevel weld prep prior to re-welding the diffuser pursuant to code.
Working around the clock with the client’s local labor force to meet regulatory compliance, Tri Tool designed and deployed custom track tooling, Tri Tool Certified Specialty Craft Personnel, precision field machining equipment and code welding procedures.
Lessons learned in completing the project ahead of schedule in Japan resulted in even quicker execution of the identical scope stateside.
Tri Tool’s project execution was described as, “flawless.” Beyond the obvious need for quality performance, on schedule, the second greatest benefit realized was Tri Tool’s expertise as reflected in their absence of need for any supervision. The manufacturer mentioned that, with time being such a crucial factor in their performance metrics, Tri Tool’s expertise enabled us to let them proceed unassisted while we focused on our expertise. They gave us more time to focus on other critical path elements.
