Tri Tool Inc., On Site Services Division under contract and in conjunction with Babcock & Wilcox provided KP&L a "Service Solution" when they discovered a through wall crack on a large steam header.
The steam header was 30.25" diameter with a minimum wall thickness of 5.0". The header material was p22. Temporary restraints were used for position retention during the header excavation/repair. The proposed excavation area measured .5 at a depth of 4.5 from the header O.D. With a combination 37.5-degree X 15-degree sidewall transition angle the opening of the excavation area at the header O.D. would exceed 3.25".

Tri Tool Services Division utilized a 630SB O.D. mounted clamshell with hydraulic drive motors. Tooling was designed to accommodate a precise step cut process to ensure elimination of existing weld material as required. As depicted in the photographs consideration of axial and radial clearance was paramount due to the location of the weld excavation area and adjacent features.

The weld excavation project described above was completed safely, ahead of schedule and within budget.
At Tri Tool Inc., Services Division we are in the business of providing our customers the most viable and economic solutions available in a timely and safe manner. Please contact us with specific questions or details concerning this project or any you may have in the future.
